On Saturday 17th July 2010, Katerina and Laurence from the VoiceYourView team, together with Miles (external to the project), attended the Stoke Aldermoor Summer Fete.
Despite the changing weather condition, the event was well attended and our stall generated considerable interest. We made use of a number of interactive displays, where the visitors to the event were either asked to place green or red pins onto maps based on the areas they liked or disliked, and stick stickers on boards with statements that applied to them. This informal way proved particularly popular with the younger generation.
Overall, the day was a success and we managed to involve about sixty individuals of various ages. Not only did we manage to get them interested in the project itself, but we also engaged them in a discussion about the area and what they liked or disliked about it. Furthermore, we collected some valuable information about them so that now we know more about Stoke Aldermoor residents’ awareness with technologies such as mobile phones and the Internet.
The findings showed that the newly built Aldermoor Farm Primary School is very popular among the community and they feel positive about it, together with other community facilities like the People’s Place and the LIFE Centre. On the contrary, local residents are concerned about a number of residential streets in the area. Local green areas got mixed views, but people are generally satisfied with them, with the exception of limited play facilities for children, including the multi games area in Pinley Gardens and a children’s playground on the Lindfield.
Awareness with technologies was found to be quite high, including ownership of mobile phones and computers with Internet access. About half of all participants send e-mails, more people preferred text messages. Online forms do not appear popular and not many people had an experience of filling them out.
We have also managed to establish a number of useful contacts for the future.
We would like to thank all the residents and visitors to the Summer Fete who expressed interest in our stall and took part. We enjoyed talking to you, we had a great day and we look forward to our future work in Stoke Aldermoor.
