Lucy Morgan's experience in postgraduate research has given her access to a PhD in Mathematics and Statistics in addition to valuable real-world training.
Top 10 with supportive staff
“I chose to come to Lancaster University because I saw it was ranked highly in the UK,” recalls Lucy. “I went to the Open Day as I’d done with other universities and wasn’t expecting anything different but it really felt like the right place for me,” she says. “I was happy knowing I was entering into a department where the staff is known to be supportive. To me this was really important.”
Encouraging independence
Lucy has been inspired by the teaching and support methods at Lancaster. “They were happy to help but they’re not just there to tell you the answer.” As she explains, “most would give you a hint to get started and then let you go back and try it again which really helped push me towards independent learning.”
Presenting research
Speaking about the topics on her course, Lucy has found statistics to be the most enjoyable and valuable. “It gave me the foundation I needed to be accepted onto a research PhD,” she says. “Obviously statistics will help here but we also had modules on how to give presentations on mathematical areas, which has been particularly valuable when trying to communicate my reseach.”
Shaping the future
By studying mathematics and statistics, Lucy is able to plan her career options whilst benefitting from her lectures. “I know that studying at Lancaster will prepare me well for academia or industry work,” she says. “Here we not only focus on mathematical ability but there’s also an emphasis on enhancing communication and presentation skills that are useful in many industries."
Helpful advice
“If you’re interested in mathematics or statistics then Lancaster would be an excellent place for you to study,” says Lucy. “I found I had time to engage fully in my studies whilst enjoying the university experience. A wide range of topics are covered giving you a broad mathematical knowledge which could be used in many careers or research directions.”
Great experiences
In addition to university life and study, Lucy’s course provided real-world training. “I undertook a research internship in the STOR-i centre for Doctoral Training where I expanded my knowledge of statistics and operational research,” she explains. “I was given the opportunity to apply what I had learnt at undergraduate level which helped me to solve complex problems.” Lucy has gained much from her time at the University. “I love Lancaster because it has helped increase my confidence and has given me the opportunity to take mathematics a step further to PhD level.”
