Chemistry has been ranked 10th in the UK for research output quality in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), which measures the quality of research conducted in UK universities against international standards of excellence.

These results highlight Lancaster's position as a growing force in Chemistry research, with 94% of research output considered world leading and internationally significant.

Professor Peter Fielden, the Head of the Department from its inception in late 2012, said "This is an outstanding start for Chemistry at Lancaster as a new department. It reflects the high quality of our growing team of research-active staff."

The department recently secured a £9 million European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) grant to support facilities for engagement with the vibrant chemical industry in the North West.

In the New Year, a new building will open to provide extensive facilities for cutting-edge chemistry research and teaching, and house an extensive array of instrumentation and equipment.
