Facilities
Over £45 million has been invested in your environment to provide state-of-the-art facilities, including modern workshops and laboratories and highly specialised equipment.
Chemistry
The Chemistry Department, housed in the fully refurbished Faraday Building has had over £30 million invested in laboratories, equipment, study and social spaces, and opened in July 2015. Facilities include synthetic research and teaching laboratories, physical/analytical research and teaching laboratories, and computational research and teaching laboratories which provide access to the latest software for undertaking quantum and molecular mechanical calculations.
Engineering
Opened in March 2015, this award winning building provides cutting edge equipment, mechanical workshops, 3D printing and materials preparation laboratories, chemical engineering facilities, study areas and meeting zones.
Lancaster Environment Centre
Lancaster Environment Centre has 15 purpose-built glasshouse modules dedicated to plant science and ecological research; cell biology laboratories next to imaging technologies; and some of the world’s best analytical facilities for environmental organic chemistry research. We are also the only UK university with magnetic sector instrumentation in our noble gas laboratory.
Physics
An £11.4M refurbishment program equips the Physics department with state-of-the-art teaching labs as well as welcoming social and study spaces. The new IsoLab complements the internationally leading research facilities for quantum-technologies and ultra-low temperatures, where materials and devices are cooled down to some of the coldest temperatures ever measured on earth. The exceptionally broad research activities also include particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology, as well as theoretical and mathematical physics.
Psychology
The Psychology Department is home to one of the largest human developmental centres in the UK. The £1.1 million purpose built building dedicated to behavioural testing for infancy research comprises 6 observational laboratories, a ‘moving wall’ laboratory for spatial processing research, 3 laboratories containing child-appropriate eye-trackers, an infant EEG lab and a computational developmental neuroscience lab.
Mathematics and Statistics
Awarded a Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning in Postgraduate Statistics (HEFCE 2005) and home to the Postgraduate Statistics Centre, we provide modern teaching spaces alongside dedicated lecture theatres.
Quantum Technology Centre
The Quantum Technology Centre houses a £4 million class 100 cleanroom equipped with state-of-the-art nanofabrication facilities; cryogen-free dilution refrigerator system; ultra-low temperature facilities; molecular beam epitaxial reactors and scanning probe and nanoscale microscopy characterisation facilities.
Computing & Communications
Our Department has 5 dedicated undergraduate labs; open access to a 96 1.5 TB RAM virtualisation cluster; a testbed for Software Defined Networking (SDN); digital fabrication facilities (3D printers and laser cutter); and equipment for eye tracking experiments. We also operate the public display network on campus and we have an industrial control systems testbed to evaluate security issues within these networks.
Office Space and Hot Desks
Our award winning buildings enable global high-tech and environmental businesses to co-locate onto the Lancaster University campus and work alongside our cutting-edge researchers in a unique collaborative environment. Businesses can also join and network with our established local, regional, national and international business communities and tap into a broad range of expertise, support, training and resources on site.
