Amey and United Utilities

Internship: Research to investigate jet hose failure rates.

Company: Amey provides emergency responses to any United Utilities customer issues in relation to the wastewater sewer network. Recommendations from the research were implemented by Amey and helped them win new business with larger companies.

Fat Media

Internship: Competitor analysis and psycholinguistic review of promotional documents.

Company: Fat Media Limited is a multi-award-winning website design and digital marketing company with hundreds of clients across the UK. They implemented the recommendations from the review and improved their marketing documentation to win new business.

Intelligent Turf

Internship: Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing database development to capture, visualise and analyse temporal and spatial data on turfgrass sites.

Company: Intelligent Turf Limited provides precision turfgrass management through the capture, analysis and visualisation of objective plant and soil data. The interns helped the business to move forward and develop a product and service which is being used at golf courses and stadia.

The Land Trust

Internship: Research on the health benefits of open spaces.

Company: The Land Trust provides cost effective management solutions for open space and green infrastructure. They used the research as evidence to clarify and hone their key messages for communications and marketing purposes.

Next World Web

Internship: Development of a web application to act as a promotional tool.

Company: Next World Web is a web development company, providing software engineering and programming specialising in bespoke web application including ecommerce websites. The internship provided them with a new service offering to attract new clients.

Simplifi

Internship: Research to improve customer support for a compliance software tool and to source and contact potential clients for the company to help expand its client base.

Company: Simplifi-Solutions Limited provides a range of tools to help businesses monitor and manage their compliance with relevant energy, environmental and health and safety legislation. The research informed the development of their tools and helped attract new clients.

The Environment Agency

Organisation: The Environment Agency (EA), with area offices based in Preston and Penrith, is an Executive Non-departmental Public Body responsible to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Xyone

Jenny Lam, MSci IT for Creative Industries with Industrial Experience, was recruited through the Science and Technology Internship Programme to help launch the Cyber Advisory Service for Xyone Cyber Security Solutions Limited.

Lancaster Materials Analysis

Lancaster University spin out company Lancaster Material Analysis Ltd. (LMA), based in Lancaster, offers commercial access to material analysis services, in particular scanning probe microscopy and cross-sectional imaging and analysis.

Gamesko Ltd.

Gamesko Limited, based in Lancaster, operates a social poker product which their customers play through Facebook, or their iOS and Android apps. The company wanted to develop a tool to help them manage their product range.

Hardy & Ellis Inventions

Hardy & Ellis Inventions Ltd, based at InfoLab21, required help designing enclosures for their different projector and sensor configurations and approached Lancaster Product Development Unit for assistance.

Myerscough College

Samantha Gray worked with Myerscough College to improve energy consumption on campus to fit in line with their Carbon Management plan.

Wezzoo

Wezzoo, a mobile application company which provide an interactive and novel method on providing users with weather updates, took on Leyla Page as a student intern to conduct market research.

The Printed Cup Company

Harry Messenger, MSci Hons Computer Science, was recruited to evaluate The Printed Cup Company’s current computer systems and develop programmes to integrate these into one central source of information.

King Kong Climbing approached Lancaster University’s Engineering Department to help them develop the latest concept in climbing walls – illuminated routes.

NuBlue took on a graduate from the Science and Technology's School of Computing and Communications to help deal with their growing number of clients.

The Knowledge Transfer Network

Joe McNamara, MPhys Hons Physics with Particle Physics and Cosmology, was recruited through the Science and Technology Internship Programme to provide a method of sharing files and data for The Knowledge Transfer Network.

Samantha Gray, BSc Hons Geography, was recruited through the Science and Technology Internship Programme to work on website development and social media platforms for LESS, a community interest company. 

SEO 24/7

Justin Dee, a graduate with BSc Computer Science, was recruited through the Science and Technology Internship Programme to create software for SEO 24/7, and to further develop their website.

The Irish Environmental Protection Agency

Michael Dennison, an MA Environmental Management and Consultancy student, completed research for the Irish Environment Protection Agency (EPA), a clinet of Carr Communications, to understand the success of a 2012 EPA project on septic tank inspection.

Victrex Plc., based in Lancashire, is a global high-performance polymer solutions provider serving more than 40 countries.

J Atkinson & Co.

The owners of J Atkinson & Co. wanted to balance their heritage with innovation and approached HighWire to see if they could bring digital innovation to their business.

J Atkinson & Co.

An Uno 7lb roaster, which was originally built in London in 1919, was salvaged from Liverpool’s famous Lewis’ department store when it closed in 2010, by Ian Steel, owner of specialist Lancaster-based coffee roasters J Atkinson and Co.

BT

Mathematics and Statistics PhD student Jamie Fairbrother from the UK helped BT utilise otherwise underused parts of the TV broadcast spectrum as part of the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP).
