Applying for a PhD

Choosing to study for a PhD is a big commitment, so you need to be sure from the outset that your area of research is a good fit with your chosen department.

General guidance on applying for a PhD can be found at How to Apply where you will also find guidance on writing a research proposal. Not all departments require a research proposal to be submitted with your application, but going over these guidelines may help you to understand more fully your reasons for choosing to study for a PhD and the types of research questions that might come up.

Throughout the duration of your time as a PhD student you will fall under the guidance of a member of academic staff who will supervise the completion of your thesis. In most science and technology disciplines you will be given two supervisors. In order to inform your application for a research degree, we recommend that you look closely at departmental webpages to identify key research areas and potential supervisors.
